Headbands Are No Longer Just for Fashion

When you hear “Muse”, you probably think of the English rock band. That might change in the near future. There’s a new Muse in town, and it’s a brain-sensing headband. Yes, you read that right.

How does it work? Well, to get physically fit, you would exercise your body, right? It’s the same idea, but for getting mentally fit. Muse helps train your brain with focused attention training. That means that it shows you what you typically get distracted by and then how to refocus on what you are supposed to be doing at a faster rate.

No matter what you’re doing, your mind eventually starts to wander to something unrelated.  Harvard University researchers found that when your mind strays, you are more likely to be unhappy. Therefore, it should be in your best interest to train your brain to focus on the present task.

Here is the Step by Step guide for how Muse works:

  2. Take the tutorial so that you know you are using the Muse headband correctly.
  3. Calibrate: Because your brain is different every day, Muse will calibrate itself before each session to give you the most accurate results possible. During the 60-second calibration session, you will be performing a basic brainstorming task.
  4. Perform a guided exercise: The purpose of Muse is to help reduce stress, lessen anxiety and increase your ability to focus on specific tasks. You will get feedback about your brain in real time by translating your brain signals to the sound of wind. When your mind is calm, you will hear calm winds.  On the other hand, when your mind is very active, you will hear heavy winds.  The goal is to keep the wind calm, which means you are focusing on one task and not giving in to distractions.
  5. See your results: After each 3-minute session, you’ll be shown a series of graphs and charts displaying how long you were able to stay focused, and will give tips on how to improve for the future.
  6. Track your progress and achieve your goals: Your results are saved in a private account so you can see how you improve after each session.
  7. Improve over time so that you learn how to respond to stress better, gain self-control, and even improve your emotional state!

If 2014 was the year you became physically fit, 2015 should be the year you become mentally fit. Just 3 minutes per day is all it takes with the Muse headband.
